logo.gif (38649 bytes) is a program that provides information about:

  • How babies and young children learn to talk
  • What parents can do to help their children learn
  • Where parents can get advice if they think their child may have a speech and or language problem

This website tells you about how most babies and children "talk" at different ages.  If you think that your child is not learning to talk, you can call the EARLY WORDS program at (519)354-0520 to find out about screening clinics in your community.

Anyone (parents, doctors, daycare staff, etc.) can refer a child for help. EARLY WORDS is funded through an annual grant from the Ministry of Health.  The program is administered through The Prism Centre.

Services that are available for babies and children up to 5 years of age in the Chatham-Kent area include:

  • Regular drop-in screening sessions
  • Consultations to day care centers and nursery schools
  • Ongoing monitoring as needed
  • Education opportunities for parents, caregivers and other professionals
  • Individual and group speech and language therapy
